Newsletter: EIBC talks next-gen AMI, testifies in Senate

Welcome to the weekly newsletter of the Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council (Michigan EIBC), the business voice for advanced energy in Michigan. Here’s what’s new this week:

Laura Sherman Discusses Next-Generation AMI on Podcast

Michigan EIBC President Laura Sherman joined the podcast “With Great Power” to discuss the need for holistic planning to deploy next-generation advanced metering infrastructure (AMI).

The next generation of AMI can provide a slate of customer benefits and address increasing load growth in ways that the first generation of smart meters have not been able to fully realize. But to do that, Sherman says utilities need to plan ahead to ensure next-gen AMI is integrated with other services like demand response and virtual power plant programs before they invest so that the new technology does not become obsolete in another ten years.

EIBC Testifies on Solar for All at Senate Hearing

Michigan EIBC Policy Director Justin Carpenter testified before the Senate Energy and Environment Committee today on how Solar for All cancellations have impacted Michigan’s energy costs and business community.

“The wrongful withdrawal of Solar for All is a withdrawal of commitment to American energy customers and businesses at a time when it was most crucial,” Carpenter told lawmakers. “As demand for energy grows at a rate unseen in many of our lifetimes, and unemployment creeps upward, it is the average American who will shoulder the burden of this reneged promise.”
