Newsletter: Residential building decarbonization roadmap, and more

Welcome to the weekly newsletter of the Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council (Michigan EIBC), the business voice for advanced energy in Michigan. Here’s what’s new this week:

Michigan EIBC Releases Policy Roadmap for Efficient and All-Electric Homes

This week Michigan EIBC, the Institute for Energy Innovation, and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) released a new policy roadmap for residential building decarbonizing at a public convening in Grand Rapids. The report, “Clean, Safe, and Affordable: A Policy Roadmap for Efficient and All-Electric Homes in Michigan,” lays out a pathway to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from Michigan’s residential building sector by 2050, in line with the MI Healthy Climate Plan.

The roadmap’s comprehensive strategy is estimated to produce 160,000 jobs, avert more than 2,800 premature deaths and nearly 39,000 asthma attacks, and lower energy bills by 2050. As EGLE Director Phil Roos said, “This roadmap shows how we can eliminate emissions from the residential sector while creating jobs, saving lives, and making homes safer and more affordable for everyone.”

The public convening gathered state and local policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to discuss the roadmap’s findings and recommendations. It also featured remarks from Director Roos and a tour of an all-electric home with Habitat for Humanity. Thank you to all who joined us!

Read Laura Sherman in Michigan Planner Magazine

In the latest issue of the Michigan Planner, Michigan EIBC President Laura Sherman explains how economics, consumer demand, and state leadership continue to drive clean energy in Michigan, despite major federal rollbacks.

“The trend toward affordable, clean energy is inevitable,” Sherman writes. “The question is whether federal and state policies will ease that transition or be an obstacle.”
